Names and Places Project Update

Mabel Eunson, Denise Brown and Isobel Gardner have been researching property transactions and maps of Deerness in the Orkney Archive. It's been a busy winter however with other St Ninian's tasks so no Saturday gatherings to pore over maps at the Hall. We will get going again in the Autumn, but in the meantime can we renew our plea for photos and documents relating to Deerness in the past . If you have anything you think may be of interest, or would like to be involved please call Anne Mitchell on 741300.

Deerness Places and Names Project

The Deerness Places and Names Team with Orkney County Archaeologist, Julie Gibson and Shetland Amenity Trust Place-Names Officer, Eileen Brooke-Freeman.The Deerness Places and Names project took a further step forward this month when the group received a visit from Orkney County Archaeologist, Julie Gibson and Shetland Amenity Trust Place-Names Officer, Eileen Brooke-Freeman.

Eileen was in Orkney at the start of May as part of the NPP Thing Project and came out to Deerness to meet with the group to let them know about her Shetland place-name project and to discuss how to map and store the information collected. Julie Gibson was there to hear from Eileen too and to ask the Deerness Group to take part in the pilot for her up-and-coming interactive NESTA project, which will allow users to record data such as updates on key monuments which are at risk from coastal erosion, sound files of place-names and photographic records.
